Outdoor Learning

Learning is not just about working in the classroom. Outdoor learning provides memorable learning experiences for children and helps them to make sense of the world around them.  It puts their learning into a meaningful context.  Recent studies have highlighted the benefits of outdoor learning to:

  • Foster curiosity and problem solving skills
  • Encourage greater independence
  • Improve focus and concentration
  • Allow children develop their own understanding of how to take risks and what is safe
  • Improve social skills, involvement and initiative
  • Encourage children to explore activities through a multi-sensory approach
  • Provide unlimited opportunities for children to experience ‘hands-on/experiential learning’ (I do, I understand)

At Gilbert Colvin we believe every child from Early Years through to Year 6 should experience the outdoor environment as an essential part of their learning.  The outdoor environment offers motivating, exciting, relevant activities which supports our enquiry-based curriculum.
